The detectors
Three tools produce most of the scores students are accused over. Each page below is built from the vendor's own documentation — what the number means, what the vendor concedes about its limits, and what to ask for. The pattern repeats: every vendor says, in its own words, that its score is not proof and should not be the only basis for action. Schools know this. Your answer can remind them.
The percentage, the hidden 1–19% range shown only as an asterisk, the sentence-level error rate of about 4%, and Turnitin's own sentence: the score “should not be used as the sole basis for action.”
Document probabilities and sentence highlights, a claimed false-positive rate of no more than 1%, and GPTZero's own warning that its results “should not be used to punish students.”
Copyleaks, Originality.ai, ZeroGPT, and school-built tools — what they claim, what independent tests found (14 tools, none above 80% accuracy in 2023 testing), and the questions that fit any tool.
